France will vote against an authorization of glyphosate for more than 3 years

France will vote against any proposal for a new European authorization over three years of glyphosate, one of the most used herbicides in agriculture, announced today the Minister of the Ecological Transition, Nicolas Hulot.

Paris, Nov 8 (EFE) .- France will vote against any proposal for a new European authorization over three years of glyphosate, one of the most used herbicides in agriculture, announced today the Minister of the Ecological Transition, Nicolas Hulot.

"We will not vote for five years," warned Hulot, in a radio interview broadcast by "RMC" and "BFMTV," referring to the intention of the European Commission to propose to the Member States tomorrow a renewal of the right to market glyphosate for five additional years.

He insisted that France will vote "against" any extension that goes beyond three years, a period that it justified taking into account that farmers have to find alternatives to this product.

The representatives of the EU countries and the Community Executive met on October 25 to decide on the renewal, but finally decided to postpone the vote for the division between them.

The French minister said that if he had not been firm, the glyphosate would have obtained an authorization for another ten years and emphasized "France is leading" in the intention to ban it.

Asked if this herbicide is carcinogenic, a matter of controversy between scientific committees, he replied that believes "a lot in the CIRC", the cancer research center of the World Health Organization (WHO), which has cataloged it as possibly carcinogenic and "has never been wrong ".

" Apply the precautionary principle (...) Do not wait to have a list of tragic victims to act, "he said.
